A structural idea with no engineering department behind it yet: modular units, kits, racks, mounts, lifting frames. Feasibility, first sizing and prototype calculations, written so that the engineer who reviews or seals the design has something defensible to work from.

I do not seal drawings. That is deliberate. The seal belongs to a licensed engineer in your jurisdiction. My work is prepared for their review, and the separation is stated up front rather than discovered later.

You have an engineer. I work as your design subconsultant. You set the brief and the standard, I produce the calculations and drawings, and your Engineer of Record reviews and seals them.

You have a plant engineering department. The same arrangement, in house. Your internal engineering authority reviews the work and carries it, exactly as it would for any other supplier.

You have neither. You appoint a licensed engineer in your jurisdiction. They review, comment and seal; I revise to their comments until the package is accepted. Every US permit package I have worked on was handled this way.

On the record. US permit submittals, including LADBS and Orange County, California, have been reviewed, commented on and sealed by client-appointed licensed engineers. Review cycles are part of the job, not an exception.

Most engineers work to one code for their whole career. Working across both the Western and the post-Soviet families is unusual, and it is what makes a project in Kazakhstan and a project in Queensland the same kind of problem rather than two different careers. It is also why practices with their own engineering department bring me the job that falls outside the code they work to every day: they have the engineer who reviews and seals it — what they do not have is the code.

Who owns the calculations and models?

You do, on final payment. Native files are handed over on request: SAP2000, Revit, Tekla, DWG.

How many revisions are included?

Every revision that comes from a reviewer’s comment on my own work. Changes to the brief are quoted separately, before I start them.
