Steel building insulation has to solve two separate problems — keeping heat in or out, and controlling the sound and condensation a bare metal envelope would otherwise let straight through — and most buildings combine two or three insulation types to do both at once.

Common Insulation Systems

The right system (or combination) depends on climate, energy code and whether acoustic performance is a project requirement.

Fiberglass blanket (draped-over-purlin). The most common and economical system for metal buildings, typically delivering R-values in roughly the R-13 to R-19 per-layer range, installed as blankets draped over the purlins before the roof or wall panel is fastened down.

Rigid foam board (PIR/PUR). Closed-cell foam boards offer a higher R-value per inch — commonly cited in the R-5 to R-7 per inch range — making them useful where wall or roof thickness is limited but a higher thermal performance is still required.

Insulated metal panels (IMPs). A foam core factory-laminated between two steel skins in a single panel, combining structure, insulation and finished interior/exterior surface in one installed layer, commonly used where both thermal performance and installation speed matter.

Acoustic treatment. Where sound control matters — assembly spaces, arenas, occupied mezzanines — a perforated liner panel or added acoustic insulation layer is used specifically to absorb reverberant noise, which is a separate design goal from thermal R-value and is usually specified alongside it, not instead of it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What R-value does my steel building need?

It depends on the local energy code and climate zone, not on a single universal number — codes commonly target roughly R-19 for walls and R-30 or higher for roofs in moderate-to-cold climates, but the exact requirement must be confirmed against the code in force at the building’s location.

Does insulation also help with condensation?

Yes — insulation (and an accompanying vapor barrier) keeps the interior face of the metal panel above the dew point in most conditions, which is often as important as the thermal R-value itself for preventing condensation dripping inside the building.

Can acoustic performance and thermal performance be achieved with the same layer?

Not fully — a standard thermal insulation layer provides some sound absorption, but dedicated acoustic treatment (perforated liner panels, added acoustic insulation) is typically specified separately when sound control is a specific project requirement, such as in arenas or occupied spaces.
